الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

بِرُّ الرَّجُلِ بِوَلَدِهِ بِرُّهُ بِوَالِدَيْهِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The parent's goodness towards his child is [tantamount to] his goodness towards his own parents.

Imam Ali (as):

The right of a child incumbent upon his father is that he should give him a good name, improve his manners, and teach him the Quran.

The best inheritance parents bequeath their progeny are good manners, not wealth, for wealth goes away but good manners endure.

وَ أَمَّا حَقُّ الصَّغِيرِ فَرَحْمَتُهُ وَ تَثْقِيفُهُ وَ تَعْلِيمُهُ وَ الْعَفْوُ عَنْهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَيْهِ وَ الرِّفْقُ بِهِ وَ الْمَعُونَةُ لَهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَى جَرَائِرِ حَدَاثَتِهِ فَإِنَّهُ سَبَبٌ لِلتَّوْبَةِ وَ الْمُدَارَاةُ لَهُ وَ تَرْكُ مُمَاحَكَتِهِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى لِرُشْدِه .‏

Imam al-Sajjad (as):

The right of a youngster is that you should show mercy to him educate him well, teach him and pardon him, cover his faults and treat him gently, help him and conceal the offences of his young age [from others], for this will cause him to repent, you should also treat him amicably and avoid quarreling with him for that is more likely to rectify him.

الإمام السّجاد (عليه السَّلام):

وَ أَمَّا حَقُّ وَلَدِكَ فَأَنْ تَعْلَم‏ …ِ وَ أَنَّكَ مَسْئُولٌ عَمَّا وُلِّيتَهُ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْأَدَبِ وَ الدَّلَالَةِ عَلَى رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ الْمَعُونَةِ له عَلَى طَاعَتِهِ فَاعْمَلْ فِي أَمْرِهِ عَمَلَ مَنْ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ مُثَابٌ عَلَى الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَيْهِ مُعَاقَبٌ عَلَى الْإِسَاءَةِ إِلَيْه .‏

Imam al-Sajjad (as):

The right of your child is that you should know that you are responsible for what has been assigned to you regarding him, that is teaching him good manners, guiding him towards his Lord, and helping him in His obedience, so deal with him like the one who knows that he will be rewarded for doing good to him, and punished for mistreating him.

جاءَ رَجُلٌ إلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه و آله فَقالَ : ما قَبَّلتُ صَبِيّا قَطُّ . فَلَمّا وَلّى قالَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله : هذا رَجُلٌ عِندي أنَّهُ مِن أهلِ النّارِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The Prophet (s) with regard to a man who stated [proudly], 'I have never kissed a child', said after he had left, 'To me this man is one of the people of Hell.'

أصـدَقُ الأسمـاءِ ما سُمِّـيَ بِالعُبُودِيَّـةِ ، و أفضَلُهـا أسمـاءُ الأنبياءِ.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):

The most truthful of names is that which indicates one’s servitude [to Allah] and the best of them are the names of the prophets (as).

أوَّلُ ما يَبَرُّ الرَّجُلُ وَلَدَهُ أن يُسَمِّيَهُ بِاسمٍ حَسَنٍ، فَلْيُحَسِّنْ أحَدُكُمُ اسمَ وَلَدِهِ.

Imam al-Kazim (as):

The very first act of kindness of a man towards his son is to give him a good name, so keep good names for your children.

استَحسِنُوا أسماءَكُم ؛ فإنّكُم تُدعَوْنَ بها يَومَ القِيامَةِ : قُمْ يا فُلانَ ابنَ فُلانٍ إلى نورِكَ ، و قُمْ يا فُلانَ ابنَ فُلانٍ لا نُورَ لَكَ.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

Choose good names for yourselves, for verily you will be called by them on the Day of Resurrection: Come O x son of x towards your light, or: O x son of x, there is no light for you.
