إنَّ اللّه عزّ و جلّ لَم يَبْعثْ نَبيّا إلاّ بصِدقِ الحديثِ و أداءِ الأمانةِ إلَى البَرِّ و الفاجرِ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Allah did not send anyone as a prophet unless they possessed two qualities: they were truthful in speech and they would return a trust to its owner be he good or wicked.

انْظُرْ ما بَلغَ بهِ عليٌّ عليه السلام عندَ رسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ، فإنَّ عليّا عليه السلام إنّما بَلغَ ما بَلغَ بهِ عندَ رسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله بصِدقِ الحديثِ و أداءِ الأمانةِ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Look at the status Ali attained with the prophet (as), verily Ali reached the status he had with the prophet (s) through truthfulness in his speech and his prompt return of goods entrusted in his care.

ثلاثٌ لم يَجعلِ اللّهُ عزّ و جلّ لأحدٍ فيهنّ رُخْصةً: أداءُ الأمانةِ إلَى البَرِّ و الفاجرِ ، و الوفاءُ بالعَهدِ للبَرِّ و الفاجرِ ، و بِرُّ الوالِدَينِ بَرَّينِ كانا أو فاجِرَينِ .
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
There are three things regarding which Allah, the Exalted, did not allow any flexibility: returning a trust to its owner, be he good or wicked; keeping one's pact with both the good and the wicked; and kindness to one's parents whether they be good or wicked.

Imam Ali (as):
Do not betray someone who trusts you even if he has betrayed you before, and do not discredit your enemy even if he happens to have discredited you.

Trustworthiness and fulfilment of promises are the truthfulness of actions, and lying and slander are the betrayal of speeches.
