He who advises his brother in private adorns him, and he who advises him publicly degrades him.

مَنْ كَفَّ نَفْسَهُ‏ عَنْ أَعْرَاضِ النَّاسِ‏، أَقَالَ‏ اللَّهُ نَفْسَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
He who refrains from tarnishing people's reputations, Allah will grant relief to his soul on the day of resurrection.

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام: قُولُوا الْخَيْرَ؛ تُعْرَفُوا بِهِ، وَ اعْمَلُوا الْخَيْرَ؛ تَكُونُوا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، وَ لَا تَكُونُوا عُجُلًا مَذَايِيعَ؛ فَإِنَّ خِيَارَكُمُ الَّذِينَ إِذَا نُظِرَ إِلَيْهِمْ ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ، وَ شِرَارَكُمُ الْمَشَّاؤُونَ بِالنَّمِيمَةِ، الْمُفَرِّقُونَ بَيْنَ الْأَحِبَّةِ، الْمُبْتَغُونَ لِلْبُرَآءِ الْمَعَايِبَ.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Speak good words so you become known for it, and do good so you are considered of its people, and do not be rush and do not reveal secrets. Verily the best of you are those who, upon looking at them, Allah is remembered, and the worst of you are those who spread slander, cause separation among the loved ones and seek to find faults with innocent people.

طوبى لِعَبدٍ نُومَةٍ ، عَرَفَهُ اللّهُ و لم يَعرِفْهُ النّاسُ ، اُولئكَ مَصابيحُ الهُدى و يَنابيعُ العِلمِ ، يَنجَلي عَنهُم كلُّ فِتنَةٍ مُظلِمَةٍ ، لَيسوا بالمَذاييعِ البُذُرِ و لا بالجُفاةِ المُرائينَ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Blessed be every unknown worshipper whom Allah knows but people do not know. They are the lights of guidance and the springs of knowledge. Every dark sedition and obscure matter is uncovered for them. They are not the revealers of secrets nor are they treacherous hypocrites.

اُمِرَ النّاسُ بخَصلَتَينِ فَضَيَّعُوهُما فَصارُوا مِنهُما على غيرِ شيءٍ : الصَّبرُ و الكِتمانُ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
People were enjoined to have two qualities but they neglected them and as a result lost everything: [They are] patience and concealment [of secrets].

امتَحِنوا شِيعَتَنا عِندَ ثَلاثٍ: عِندَمَواقيتِ الصَّلاةِ كيفَ مُحافَظَتُهُم علَيها، وعِندَ أسرارِهِم كيفَ حِفظُهُم لَها عِندَ عَدُوِّنا، وإلى أموالِهِم كيفَ مُواساتُهُم لإخوانِهِم فيها.
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Test our Shia with regard to three things: the prayer times to see how well they observe them, their secrets to see how well they guard them from our enemies, and their wealth to see how they help out their fellow brothers with it.
