Verily the love of high ranks and publicity do not exist in the heart of one who is awed and fearful [of Allah].

ما ذِئبانِ ضارِيانِ في غَنَمٍ لَيسَ لَها راعٍ، هذا في أوَّلِها و هذا في آخِرِها، بِأسرَعَ فيها مِن حُبِّ المالِ و الشَّرَفِ في دِينِ المؤمِنِ .

Two rapacious wolves hunting a herd that has been left without a shepherd are not nearly as dangerous as the love of wealth and high ranks are to the faith of a believer.

فيما ناجى اللّهُ تعالى بهِ موسى عليه السلام : ......... لا تَغبِطَنَّ أحدا بِرِضَى الناسِ عَنهُ حتّى تَعلَمَ أنَّ اللّهَ راضٍ عَنهُ ، و لا تَغبِطَنَّ مَخلوقا بطاعَةِ الناسِ لَهُ فإنّ طاعةَ الناسِ لَهُ و اتِّباعَهُم إيّاهُ على غيرِ الحقِّ هَلاكٌ لَهُ و لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
In an intimate conversation that Allah had with Prophet Moses (AS), He said: "Do not envy anyone merely because people are pleased with him until you know that Allah is also pleased with him, and do not envy anyone for being obeyed by people, because people’s obedience to him and their adherence to him in falsehood is a source of destruction for him and for those adhering to him.

مَن نَصَبَ نَفسَهُ لِلنّاسِ إماما فعَلَيهِ أن ‏يَبدَأ بِتَعليمِ نَفسِهِ قَبلَ تَعليمِ غَيرِهِ، وَليَكُن تَأديبُهُ بِسيرَتِهِ قَبلَ تَأديبِهِ بِلِسانِهِ، ومُعَلِّمُ نَفسِهِ ومُؤَدِّبُها أحَقُّ بِالإجلالِ مِن مُعَلِّمِ النّاسِ ومُؤَدِّبِهِم.
Imam Ali (as):
One who appoints himself as a leader of the people must first begin by educating himself before educating others; he must discipline through his own behaviour, before disciplining with his tongue. And The one who teaches and disciplines himself is more worthy of esteem than the one who teaches and disciplines people.

The truly noble one is he who has been ennobled by his knowledge, and true chiefdom belongs to he who is wary of his duty to Allah, his Lord.
