[فَرَضَ اللَّهُ] الصَّلَاةَ تَنْزِيهاً عَنِ الْكِبْرِ

Imam Ali (as):

Allah made the prayer incumbent in order to eliminate one’s pride.

يا ابا ذرّ! الْجُلُوسُ سَاعَةً عِنْدَ مُذَاكَرَةِ الْعِلْمِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ قِيَامِ أَلْفِ لَيْلَةٍ يُصَلَّى فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ أَلْفُ رَكْعَةٍ وَ الْجُلُوسُ سَاعَةً عِنْدَ مُذَاكَرَةِ الْعِلْمِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ أَلْفِ غَزْوَةٍ وَ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ كُلِّه‏

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

O Abadhar, an hour of sitting for scientific discussion is more beloved to Allah than one’s keeping vigil for a thousand nights wherein he performs a thousand units of prayer in each night. Gathering for scientific discussion for an hour is more beloved to Allah than a thousand battles, and reciting the entire Qur’an.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

المؤمنُ لَه قوّةٌ في دِينٍ ، و حَزْمٌ في لِينٍ ، و إيمانٌ في يقينٍ ، و حِرْصٌ في فِقهٍ ، و نَشاطٌ في هُدىً ......... و صَلاةٌ في شُغلٍ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The believer possesses strength in his religion, prudence in his leniency, faith in conviction, an avid desire for religious understanding, activity in [matters pertaining to] guidance... and prayer during times of preoccupation.

Verily Allah does not answer the supplication that comes from a hard heart.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

إنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُذنِبُ الذَّنبَ فَيُحرَمُ صلاةَ اللَّيلِ، و إنَّ العَمَلَ السَّيِّءَ أسرَعُ في صاحِبِهِ مِن السِّكِّينِ في اللَّحمِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Indeed the servant commits a sin, and as a result he is deprived of the Night Prayer. And verily the evil deed pierces into and affects the one who committed it faster than a sharp knife can pierce into meat.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

عنه عليه السلام ـ في قولِهِ تعالى : «إنَّ الحَسَناتِ يُذهِبْنَ السَّيّئاتِ» ـ : صلاةُ المؤمنِ بِالليلِ تَذهَبُ بما عَمِلَ مِن ذَنبٍ بِالنهارِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Imam al-Sadiq (as), with regards to Allah's verse: "Indeed good deeds make amends for evil deeds." said: "A believer's prayer in the middle of the night makes amends for the sins he has committed during the day."

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

إذا قامَ العَبدُ فِي الصَّلاةِ فَخَفَّفَ صَلاتَهُ قالَ اللّه تَبارَكَ و تَعالى لِملائكتِهِ : أ ما تَرَونَ إلى عَبدِي كَأنّهُ يَرى أنَّ قَضاءَ حَوائجِهِ بِيَدِ غَيري ! أ ما يَعلَمُ أنّ قَضاءَ حَوائجِهِ بِيَدي ؟!

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

When a servant of God stands in prayer and performs it hurriedly, God Almighty says to His angels: 'Do you not see My servant praying in a way as if the fulfilment of his need is in the hand of someone other than Me? Does he not know that the fulfilment of his need is in My Hand?'

الإمام الكاظم (عليه السَّلام):

عَلَيكَ بِالجِدِّ، لا تُخرِجَنَّ نَفسَكَ مِن حَدِّ التَّقصيرِ في عِبادَةِ اللّهِ عَزَّ و جلَّ و طاعَتِهِ؛ فإنَّ اللّهَ لا يُعبَدُ حَقَّ عِبادَتِهِ .

Imam al-Kazim (as):

You must adopt earnestness, and always assume yourself to be falling short in God's worship and His obedience, for verily God is never worshipped as He aught to be worshipped.

كُونُوا دُعاةً لِلنّاسِ بِغَيرِ ألسِنَتِكُم ، لِيَرَوا مِنكُمُ الوَرعَ و الاجتِهادَ و الصَّلاةَ و الخَيرَ ، فإنَّ ذلكَ داعِيَةٌ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Invite people to what is good with other than your tongues, so that they see in you piety, tenacity, diligence in prayer and goodness, for this is enough to invite them to goodness.
