Imam Ali (as):
Asceticism [Zuhd] is summed up between two phrases in the Qur'an, where Allah, most High, says, "So that you may not grieve for what has escaped you, nor be exultant at what He has given you." Therefore, one who neither grieves about past losses nor is overjoyed about the possessions he is granted has perfected his asceticism from both sides.'

Imam Ali (as):

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
He who does not increase in asceticism from worldly pleasures in spite of an increase in his knowledge only gets further away from Allah.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
You might think that the prophet spent three consecutive days having eaten to his full since the time Allah mandated him with prophethood until He seized his soul. No, by Allah, he was never satiated for three consecutive days eversince he was commissioned with prophethood until he was taken [to his Lord]. It was not because he did not have access to enough food; he would, sometimes, reward a person with one hundred camels; so had he wanted, he could have eaten.

Imam Ali (as):
By Allah, if I was given all the seven domains with all that exists under its celestial spheres in order that I may disobey Allah to the extent of snatching a single grain of barley from an ant, I would not do it. Verily your world to me is more worthless than a leaf being gnawed at in the mouth of a locust.

Imam Ali (as):
Let me suffice with salt and some loaves of bread out of [the comforts of] your world, for I see felicity to be secured only through God-wariness. What does Ali have to do with a bounty which is bound to perish and an enjoyment provided through sin? My Shia and I will meet our Lord with eyes which kept awake [at nights] and with empty stomachs.
