Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
A man came to the Prophet (SAWA) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, whom shall I be good to?' He said, 'Your mother.' He asked, 'Then who?' He (SAWA) said, 'Your mother.' He asked, 'Then who?' He (SAWA) said, 'Your mother.' He said, 'And then who?' He (SAWA) replied, 'Your father.'

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
What prevents one among you from doing good to his parents, be them alive or dead? Such that he performs prayers, gives charity, performs Hajj, and fasts on their behalf, in which case he has both done good to them and will also have the same reward for himself, and Allah will multiply his reward for his righteousness and goodness.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
Verily a man is obedient to his parents during their lifetime, then after they die, he does not repay their debts nor does he seek God's forgiveness for them, therefore God records him as being insolent. And a man is insolent to his parents and not good to them during their lifetime, but after their death he repays their debts and seeks forgiveness for them, therefore God records him as being righteous [and good to his parents].

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Regarding the verse: “and be good to parents” Imam al-Sadiq (as) said, "Being good to parents means that you keep company with them kindly, and do not give them the trouble of asking you for what they need [do not wait until they ask you for their needs] even if they happen to be rich."

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Allah, Blessed and most High, is more affectionate to females than to males, and any man who brings happiness into the heart of a woman he is related to, Allah will make him happy on the Day of Resurrection.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Had there been anything less disrespectful than saying 'fie' [to one's parents], Allah would have forbidden it, and so it is the lowest level of insolence. Insolence also includes a man's looking at his parents with a sharp gaze.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The lowest level of insolence [to one's parents] is saying: 'Fie', and had there been anything less disrespectful than that, Allah, mighty and Exalted, would have forbidden it.

Imam al-Reḍa (as):
I said to Imam al-Ridha (as), 'Can one pray for their parents if they are not acquainted with the right path [they do not adhere to Islam or Shi'ism]?' The Imam replied, 'One must pray for them and give charity on their behalf [if they are dead] and if they are alive and are not acquainted with the right path, one must still treat them with gentleness, as the prophet (s) said, 'Verily God sent me with [the message of] mercy and not with insolence [to one's parents].'
