إِنَّ اَلدَّابَّةَ إِذَا لَمْ تُرْكَبْ وَ لَمْ تُمْتَهَنْ وَ تُسْتَعْمَلْ لَتَصْعُبُ وَ يَتَغَيَّرُ خُلُقُهَا وَ كَذَلِكَ اَلْقُلُوبُ إِذَا لَمْ تُرَقَّقْ بِذِكْرِ اَلْمَوْتِ وَ يَتْبَعْهَا دُءُوبُ اَلْعِبَادَةِ تَقْسُو وَ تَغْلُظُ

:

Jesus (PBUH) said: When a mule is left unridden, unworked, and unloaded for a long time, its nature will change and will become bad-tempered. Hearts are just the same, when they are not softened by the remembrance of death followed by the perseverance of worship, they will become rough and hardened.

وقال لابنه الحسن: يا بُنَيَّ لاَ تُخَلِّفَنَّ وَرَاءَكَ شَيْئاً مِنَ الدُّنْيَا، فَإِنَّكَ تُخَلِّفُهُ لاِحَدِ رَجُلَيْنِ: إِمَّا رَجُلٍ عَمِلَ فِيهِ بِطَاعَةِ اللهِ فَسَعِدَ بِمَا شَقِيتَ بِهِ، وَإِمَّا رَجُلٍ عَمِلَ فِيهِ بِمَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ فَشَقِيَ بِمَا جَمَعْتَ لَهُ فَكُنْتَ عَوْناً لَهُ عَلى مَعْصِيَتِهِ، وَلَيْسَ أَحَدُ هذَيْنِ حَقِيقاً أَنْ تُؤْثِرَهُ عَلَىُ نَفْسِكَ

Imam Ali (as):

Imam Ali (AS) said to his son al-Hasan (AS): O my son, do not leave anything of this world behind you, as it could fall into the hands of two types of people: Either a person who uses it in obeying Allah, in which case, he will acquire virtue through what was evil for you, or it will be a person who uses it in disobeying Allah and in that case he will be earning evil with what you collected for him and so you will be assisting him in his sinfulness; and neither of these two deserves to be preferred by you over yourself.

He who remembers death frequently is satisfied with little livelihood from this world.

مِسْكِينٌ ابْنُ آدَمَ: مَكْتُومُ الاْجَلِ، مَكْنُونُ الْعِلَلِ، مَحْفُوظُ الْعَمَلِ، تَؤْلِمُهُ الْبَقَّةُ، وَتَقْتُلُهُ الشَّرْقَةُ وَتُنْتِنُهُ الْعَرْقَةُ

Imam Ali (as):

How wretched is the son of Adam! Lifespan unknown, ailments concealed, actions recorded; he hurts from the sting of a gnat, chokes from a sip of water, and stinks from a drop of sweat.

رُبَّ مُسْتَقْبِلٍ يَوْماً لَيْسَ بِمُسْتَدْبِرِهِ وَمَغْبُوطٍ فِي أَوَّلِ لَيْلِهِ قَامَتْ بَوَاكِيهِ فِي آخِرِهِ

Imam Ali (as):

Many a man begins a day he will not survive, and many a man is in an enviable position in the earlier part of the night but is wept over by bewailing women in its later part.

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):

وَ عَزَّى قَوْماً عَنْ مَيِّتٍ مَاتَ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ [عليه السلام] إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ لَيْسَ لَكُمْ بَدَأَ وَ لَا إِلَيْكُمُ انْتَهَى وَ قَدْ كَانَ صَاحِبُكُمْ هَذَا يُسَافِرُ فَعُدُّوهُ فِى بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَإِنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَ إِلَّا قَدِمْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ

Imam Ali (as):

Offering condolences to some persons upon the death of a loved one, ʿAlī said: This matter has not begun with you and will not end with you. Your friend used to travel, so think of him as being away on one of his journeys. If he does not come back to you, you will go forward to meet him.
