[فَرَضَ اللَّهُ] الْجِهَادَ عِزّاً لِلْإِسْلَامِ
Imam Ali (as):
Allah has made Jihad incumbent in order to preserve the honor and sanctity of Islam.

وَ مَا مِنْ قَطْرَةٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ قَطْرَتَيْنِ قَطْرَةِ دَمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَ قَطْرَةِ دَمْعَةٍ فِي سَوَادِ اللَّيْلِ لَا يُرِيدُ بِهَا عَبْدٌ إِلَّا اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.
Imam al-Sajjad (as):
No drops are more beloved to Allah, the Exalted, than two: a drop of blood [shed] for the sake of Allah, and a teardrop shed by a servant in the darkness of the night solely for Allah's sake.'

إنّما شِيعَةُ عليٍّ مَن عَفَّ بَطنُهُ و فَرجُهُ ، و اشتَدَّ جِهادُهُ ، و عَمِلَ لِخالِقِهِ ، و رَجا ثَوابَهُ ، و خافَ عِقابَهُ، فإذا رأيتَ اُولئكَ فاُولئكَ شِيعَةُ جعفرٍ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
Verily the Shia of Ali were those who restrained their stomachs and their sexual desires, who struggled and fought intensely, who worked hard for their Creator, who hoped for His reward and feared His punishment. If you have seen such people, then they are the very Shia of Jafar.

One who struggles against his own self disciplining it to obey God, and keeping it away from His disobedience, possesses, in the sight of God, the rank of a righteous martyr.

Indeed, Jihad (i.e. combat against the self) is the price for Paradise, so whosoever combats his self, achieves paradise, which is the most noble reward of God for those who perceive its glory.

لَمّا سُئلَ عنِ الشِّعرِ: إنّ المُؤمِنَ مُجاهِدٌ بِسَيفِهِ ولِسانِهِ، والذي نَفسي بيدِهِ لَكأنّما يَنضِحُونَهم بِالنَّبلِ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
The Prophet (s) was once asked about the poets, to which he replied, 'Verily the believer can either fight the enemy with his sword or his tongue, and by the One who has my soul in His Hand, it is as if they [the poets] shower them with arrows [by means of their defamatory poetry].

ألَا لا يَمْنَعَنَّ رجُلًا مَهابَةُ النّاسِ أنْ يَتكَلَّم بالحقِّ إذا عَلِمَهُ. ألَا إنّ أفضَلَ الجِهادِ كَلِمَةُ حقٍّ عندَ سُلطانٍ جائرٍ.
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Lo! Fear of people must never prevent any man from telling the truth when he knows it; truly the best jihad is a just word spoken before an unjust ruler.
