Imam Ali (as):
ʿAlī said to Ghālib ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah, Farazdaq’s father, during a longer conversation: What happened to your large herd of camels? Ghālib replied, “The winds of duty have scattered them, Commander of the Faithful,” and ʿAlī responded: That is the most admirable path they could have taken.

Imam Ali (as):
If you absolutely must be partisans to a cause, then let your partisanship be for virtuous qualities such as protection of the neighbor, fulfillment of agreements, obedience to the virtuous, opposition to the haughty, generosity towards others, abstention from rebellion... being just to people, suppressing anger and keeping away from causing corruption on the earth.

Imam Ali (as):
And if you make a covenant between yourself and your enemy or give him a surety [against life or property], then stand by your pact with loyalty and observe your liability with trustworthiness and make yourself the shield for your word

Imam Ali (as):
The breach of a promise brings about Allah’s hatred and that of people. Allah, glory be to Him, has said, ‘It is greatly hateful to Allah that you should say what you do not do.’ (Qur'an, 61:3)

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):
There are three things regarding which Allah, the Exalted, did not allow any flexibility: returning a trust to its owner, be he good or wicked; keeping one's pact with both the good and the wicked; and kindness to one's parents whether they be good or wicked.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The believer's promise made to his fellow brother is a vow for which no amends can be made if broken; so he who breaks a promise has first broken his promise to God and exposed himself to His hatred, as God says in the Quran: "O you who believe! Why do you say what you do not do? It is most hateful to God that you say what you do not do."
