Hadiths Of The Strongest of People

لا قوِىّ أقوى مِمَّن قَوِىَ على نفسِهِ فمَلَكَها و لا عاجزَ أعجزُ مِمّن أهمَلَ نفسَه فأهلَكَها.

Imam Ali (as):

No one is stronger than he who has prevailed over his own self and thus, has it under control, as there is no one weaker than he who, neglecting his own self, has ruined it.

إِنَّ الشَّدِيدَ لَيْسَ مَنْ غَلَبَ النَّاسَ وَ لَكِنَّ الشَّدِيدَ مَنْ غَلَبَ نَفْسَه‏ .

The Prophet Muhammad (S):

A strong person is not someone who overcomes others, rather a strong person is someone who overcomes his own self.

لَا قُوَّةَ كَغَلَبَةِ الْهَوَى‏ … ِ وَ لَا عَدْلَ كَالْإِنْصَافِ وَ لَا تَعَدِّيَ كَالْجَوْرِ وَ لَا جَوْرَ كَمُوَافَقَةِ الْهَوَى‏ .

:

There is no strength like that of one who can overcome his base desires... there is no justice like fairness, no transgression like injustice, and no injustice like yielding to one's base desires.

Imam Ali (as):

O Kumayl, enjoin your people to spend the day attaining noble traits and to go out in the night to fulfil the needs of those who are asleep.

أَلَا وَ إِنَّ إِمَامَكُمْ قَدِ اِكْتَفَى مِنْ دُنْيَاهُ بِطِمْرَيْهِ وَ مِنْ طُعْمِهِ بِقُرْصَيْهِ .أَلَا وَ إِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَ لَكِنْ أَعِينُونِي بِوَرَعٍ وَ اِجْتِهَادٍ وَ عِفَّةٍ وَ سَدَادٍ . فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا كَنَزْتُ مِنْ دُنْيَاكُمْ تِبْراً وَ لاَ اِدَّخَرْتُ مِنْ غَنَائِمِهَا وَفْراً وَ لاَ أَعْدَدْتُ لِبَالِي ثَوْبِي طِمْراً

Imam Ali (as):

Realize that your Imam has contented himself with two shabby pieces of clothes out of the (comforts of the) world and two loaves of bread for his meal. Certainly, you cannot live like that but at least assist me with piety, exertion, chastity and uprightness, because, by Allah, I have not treasured any gold from your world nor have I amassed plentiful wealth.

يَقْبُحُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ أَنْ يُنْكِرُ عَلَى النَّاسِ مُنْكَرَاتٍ وَ يَنْهَاهُمْ عَنْ رَذَائِلَ وَ سَيِّئَاتٍ وَ إِذَا خَلَا بِنَفْسِهِ ارْتَكَبَهَا وَ لَا يَسْتَنْكِفُ مِنْ فِعْلِهَا.

Imam Ali (as):

It is detestable for a man to reprimand people for committing indecent acts and prohibit them from vices and errors while he commits them himself whenever he is alone and does not refrain from them.
