[فَرَضَ اللَّهُ] الْأَمْرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مَصْلَحَةً لِلْعَوَامِّ وَ النَّهْيَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ رَدْعاً لِلسُّفَهَاءِ
Imam Ali (as):
Allah has made enjoining good incumbent for the good of the common people and [He has made incumbent] forbidding evil in order to prevent the foolish from mischief.

Imam Ali (as):
Imam Ali (AS) said to a man soliciting advice from him, 'Do not be of those who … prohibit others from doing something from which they themselves fail to refrain; and enjoin upon others that which they do not perform.'

وَ لَا تَتْرُكُوا الْأَمْرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ النَّهْيَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، فَيُوَلِّيَ اللَّهُ أُمُورَكُمْ شِرَارَكُمْ ثُمَّ تَدْعُونَ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَكُم‏ .
Imam Ali (as):
Never abandon the enjoinment of good and the prohibition of wrong lest the evil ones amongst you gain mastery over you whereafter you will supplicate [Allah] but you will not be answered.

مَنْ أَمَرَ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ نَهَى عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ أَوْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ أَوْ أَشَارَ بِهِ فَهُوَ شَرِيكٌ وَ مَنْ أَمَرَ بِسُوءٍ أَوْ دَلَّ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ أَشَارَ بِهِ فَهُوَ شَرِيكٌ .
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
He who enjoins good or prohibits wrong or guides towards good or suggests the doing of good will have a share in the reward. And the one who enjoins wrong or guides towards it or suggests the doing of wrong will have a share in its punishment.

وَ صَاحِبُ الْأَمْرِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى أَنْ يَكُون‏ … ُ نَاصِحاً لِلْخَلْقِ رَحِيماً رَفِيقاً بِهِم‏ … ْ وَ لَا يَسْتَعْمِلُ الْحَمِيَّة .
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
He who enjoins good needs to be well-wishing, compassionate and amicable towards people... and must not exercise harshness.

لَا يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ لَا يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ إِلَّا مَنْ كَانَ فِيهِ ثَلَاثُ خِصَالٍ رَفِيقٌ بِمَا يَأْمُرُ بِهِ رَفِيقٌ فِيمَا يَنْهَى عَنْهُ عَدْلٌ فِيمَا يَأْمُرُ بِهِ عَدْلٌ فِيمَا يَنْهَى عَنْهُ عَالِمٌ بِمَا يَأْمُرُ بِهِ عَالِمٌ بِمَا يَنْهَى عَنْه .
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
Verily the one who enjoins good and prohibits wrong must possess three qualities: he must be gentle in his enjoining of good and his prohibition of wrong, he must be just with regards to what he enjoins and what he prohibits, and he must have sufficient knowledge about what he enjoins and what he prohibits.

The Prophet Muhammad (S):
He who enjoins good and forbids wrong is indeed the vicegerent of God on the earth and that of His messenger.

خيرُ إخْوانِكَ مَن سارَعَ إلى الخيرِ و جَذَبَكَ إلَيهِ ، و أمَرَكَ بالبِرِّ و أعانَكَ علَيهِ ، خَيْرُ إِخْوَانِكَ مَنْ دَعَاكَ إِلَى صِدْقِ الْمَقَالِ بِصِدْقِ مَقَالِه‏ .
Imam Ali (as):
The best of your brothers is the one who rushes towards good and draws you towards it, enjoins you to do good and helps you with it and invites you to the truthfulness of speech by being truthful in his own speech.

إِنَّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ صَدَقَةً قِيلَ مَنْ يُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ ص إِمَاطَتُكَ الْأَذَى عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ صَدَقَةٌ وَ إِرْشَادُكَ الرَّجُلَ إِلَى الطَّرِيقِ صَدَقَةٌ وَ عِيَادَتُكَ الْمَرِيضَ صَدَقَةٌ وَ أَمْرُكَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ صَدَقَةٌ وَ نَهْيُكَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ صَدَقَةٌ وَ رَدُّكَ السَّلَامَ صَدَقَةٌ .
The Prophet Muhammad (S):
The Prophet (SAWA) said [to his companions]: 'It is incumbent upon every single Muslim to give charity every day.' When they exclaimed who would be capable of such a thing, he replied, ‘[Charity does not always involve spending money, so] Your removal of an obstacle from a pathway is an act of charity; your guiding someone to the right path is an act of charity; your visiting the sick is an act of charity; your enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong are acts of charity; and your returning someone’s greeting is an act of charity.’

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُعَذِّبُ الْعَامَّةَ بِذَنْبِ الْخَاصَّةِ إِذَا عَمِلَتِ الْخَاصَّةُ بِالْمُنْكَرِ سِرّاً مِنْ غَيْرِ أَن‏ تَعْلَمَ الْعَامَّةُ فَإِذَا عَمِلَتِ الْخَاصَّةُ بِالْمُنْكَرِ جِهَاراً فَلَمْ تُغَيِّرْ ذَلِكَ الْعَامَّةُ اسْتَوْجَبَ الْفَرِيقَانِ الْعُقُوبَةَ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.
Imam Ali (as):
Allah will not punish the common people for the sins committed by the elites as long as they commit evil deeds in secret and the common people do not know about them. However, if the elites perpetuate evil deeds openly and the common people do nothing to change their conduct, both classes will deserve punishment from Allah, Mighty and Exalted..
