قَالَ عِيسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ لِرَجُلٍ مَا تَصْنَعُ قَالَ أَتَعَبَّدُ قَالَ فَمَنْ يَعُودُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ أَخِي قَالَ أَخُوكَ أَعْبَدُ مِنْكَ

:

Prophet Jesus (AS) asked a man, ‘What are you doing?’ The man replied, ‘I am worshipping.’ So he asked, ‘Then who is it that supports you [financially]?’ He replied, ‘My brother’, to which Prophet Jesus (AS) said, ‘Your brother is a better worshipper than you.’

الإمام علي (عليه السَّلام):

لِبَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ لَا تَجْعَلَنَّ أَكْثَرَ شُغُلِكَ بِأَهْلِكَ وَ وَلَدِكَ فَإِنْ يَكُنْ أَهْلُكَ وَ وَلَدُكَ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ وَ إِنْ يَكُونُوا أَعْدَاءَ اللَّهِ فَمَا هَمُّكَ وَ شُغُلُكَ بِأَعْدَاءِ اللَّهِ

Imam Ali (as):

Imam Ali (AS) said to one of his associates: Don’t devote the major part of your life to your wife and children. If they are God’s devotees, God will take care of them. And if they are God’s enemies, well then, why should you occupy yourself with caring for God’s enemies?

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

تَقَاضَى عَلِيٌّ وَ فَاطِمَةُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فِي الْخِدْمَةِ فَقَضَى عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ ع بِخِدْمَتِهَا مَا دُونَ الْبَابِ وَ قَضَى عَلَى عَلِيٍّ ع بِمَا خَلْفَه‏ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

Ali and Fatima sought the prophet’s advice about household chores, and the prophet (s) suggested that Fatima should do the chores that are done inside the house and Ali should do the chores that required him to go out.

إِنَّ أَرْضَاكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَسْبَغُكُمْ عَلَى عِيَالِه‏

Imam al-Sajjad (as):

Verily the one whom Allah is most pleased with from among you is the one who is the most generous towards his dependents.

الإمام جعفر الصادق (عليه السَّلام ):

المؤمنُ حَسَنُ المَعونةِ ، خفيفُ المَؤونةِ، جَيّدُ التّدبيرِ لِمَعيشتِهِ ، لا يُلْسَعُ مِن جُحْرٍ مرّتينِ .

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

The believer is a great helper, and a very light burden. He is good at economizing for his livelihood, and is never stung twice from one hole [i.e. never makes the same mistake again].

All sins are severe [in requital], but the severest of them are those that result in the growth of [polluted] flesh and blood.

الإمام الكاظم (عليه السَّلام):

مَن طَلَبَ هذا الرِّزقَ مِن حِلِّهِ لِيَعودَ بهِ عَلى نفسِهِ و عِيالِهِ كانَ كالمُجاهِدِ في سبيلِ اللّهِ عزّ و جلّ ، فإن غَلَبَ علَيهِ فَلْيَستَدِنْ عَلَى اللّهِ و عَلى رسولِهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ما يَقوتُ بهِ عِيالَهُ .

Imam al-Kazim (as):

One who seeks to gain sustenance for himself and his family in a lawful manner is as the one who fights in the way of Allah. But if he is unable to do so he may incur debt, trusting in Allah and His Prophet, in order to ensure provisions for his family.

لا خَيرَ فيمَن لا يُحِبُّ جَمعَ المالِ مِن حَلالٍ ، يَكُفُّ بهِ وَجهَهُ و يَقضي بهِ دَينَهُ و يَصِلُ بهِ رَحِمَهُ.

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):

There is no good in one who does not like to collect wealth through lawful means by which he preserves his honour, repays his debts and maintains relations with his kin.
