وَ هَنَّأَ بِحَضْرَتِهِ رَجُلٌ رَجُلًا بِغُلَامٍ وُلِدَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ لِيَهْنِئْكَ الْفَارِسُ فَقَالَ [عليه السلام] لَا تَقُلْ ذَلِكَ وَ لَكِنْ قُلْ شَكَرْتَ الْوَاهِبَ وَ بُورِكَ لَكَ فِى الْمَوْهُوبِ وَ بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَ رُزِقْتَ بِرَّهُ
Imam Ali (as):
A man congratulated another on the birth of a son in ʿAlī’s presence, saying, ⟨May the warrior bring you joy!⟩ ʿAlī rebuked him: Don’t say that! Say instead: May you thank your divine benefactor, may his heavenly grace encompass this child who is his gift, may the child grow to full strength, and may you be blessed with his devotion!

إِنَ‏ خَيْرَ مَا وَرَّثَ‏ الْآبَاءُ لِأَبْنَائِهِمُ الْأَدَبُ، لَاالْمَالُ؛ فَإِنَّ الْمَالَ يَذْهَبُ، وَ الْأَدَبَ يَبْقى‏ .
Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣadiq (as):
The best inheritance parents bequeath their progeny are good manners, not wealth, for wealth goes away but good manners endure.

وَ أَمَّا حَقُّ الصَّغِيرِ فَرَحْمَتُهُ وَ تَثْقِيفُهُ وَ تَعْلِيمُهُ وَ الْعَفْوُ عَنْهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَيْهِ وَ الرِّفْقُ بِهِ وَ الْمَعُونَةُ لَهُ وَ السَّتْرُ عَلَى جَرَائِرِ حَدَاثَتِهِ فَإِنَّهُ سَبَبٌ لِلتَّوْبَةِ وَ الْمُدَارَاةُ لَهُ وَ تَرْكُ مُمَاحَكَتِهِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى لِرُشْدِه .‏
Imam al-Sajjad (as):
The right of a youngster is that you should show mercy to him educate him well, teach him and pardon him, cover his faults and treat him gently, help him and conceal the offences of his young age [from others], for this will cause him to repent, you should also treat him amicably and avoid quarreling with him for that is more likely to rectify him.

وَ أَمَّا حَقُّ وَلَدِكَ فَأَنْ تَعْلَم‏ …ِ وَ أَنَّكَ مَسْئُولٌ عَمَّا وُلِّيتَهُ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْأَدَبِ وَ الدَّلَالَةِ عَلَى رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ الْمَعُونَةِ له عَلَى طَاعَتِهِ فَاعْمَلْ فِي أَمْرِهِ عَمَلَ مَنْ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ مُثَابٌ عَلَى الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَيْهِ مُعَاقَبٌ عَلَى الْإِسَاءَةِ إِلَيْه .‏
Imam al-Sajjad (as):
The right of your child is that you should know that you are responsible for what has been assigned to you regarding him, that is teaching him good manners, guiding him towards his Lord, and helping him in His obedience, so deal with him like the one who knows that he will be rewarded for doing good to him, and punished for mistreating him.

مُرِ الصَّبيَّ فلْيَتَصدَّقْ بيدِهِ بالكِسْرةِ و القَبْضةِ و الشَّيءِ و إنْ قَلَّ ، فإنَّ كلَّ شيءٍ يُرادُ بهِ اللّهُ ـ و إنْ قَلَّ ـ بعدَ أنْ تَصدُقَ النِّيّةُ فيهِ عظيمٌ .
Imam al-Reḍa (as):
Instruct the child to give charity with his own hand, be it a piece of bread or a handful of [food] or any other small thing, for everything - no matter how little it is -if done for the sake of Allah and with an honest intention- is great.

Get beautiful wet-nurses to suckle your child and keep away from ugly ones, for verily the milk has an effect [on the child].

إنّا نأمُرُ صِبيانَنا بِالصِّيامِ إذا كانوا بَني سَبعِ سِنينَ بما أطاقُوا مِن صِيامِ اليَومِ .

We (i.e. Ahl al-Bayt) enjoin our children to fast when they reach the age of seven as much as they can bear it.
